Global Updates for Determining Separation Distance
Chris Soranno - Safety Standards & Competence Manager, SICK
Guards and protective devices must be securely installed and located at a distance such that recognized hazards cannot be accessed by affected persons by reaching over, under, around, or through a safeguard. The guidelines for calculating these minimum separation distances have traditionally been different for the North American and International markets. With the adoption of ISO 10218-1 & -2 in the US and Canada, there has been ongoing confusion in the marketplace regarding these differences. However, recent changes and additions to standards in the US and the upcoming relevant International standard drastically reduce these differences and better align both the methodology and the calculated results associated with separation distances.
