Programmable Controllers
At A3, we use the term programmable controller to include all programmable controllers, including programmable automation controllers (PACs) that use a modern programming language such as C, C++, Labview, etc. We do not include controllers, like programmable logic controllers (PLCs), that use ladder logic.
Programmable Automation Controllers (PACs) are essentially industrial controllers that combine the functionality of a PLC with the processing capability of a PC. PACs are defined by the following five characteristics:
- multi-domain functionality
- a single, multi-discipline development platform
- flexible software tools that maximize process flow across machines or processes
- an open, modular architecture
- compatibility with enterprise networks
Another programmable controller is the microcontroller, which is a small computer (SoC) on a single integrated circuit containing a processor core, memory, and programmable input/output (I/O) peripherals. Microcontrollers are designed to be used for embedded applications.
