Virtual Reality Goes Beyond Gaming
Virtual reality has gotten a lot of attention in the popular press thanks to the advent of the Oculus Rift system. So far, the Oculus Rift stands alone as the most advanced virtual reality system to be commercialized for the mass market gaming industry.
As impressive as it is, however, the Oculus Rift is only one part of a massive emergence of virtual reality technology. True – VR might find its way into entertainment the soonest, but it will ultimately make a huge impact in a wide range of settings.
Some of those include:
Architecture
Until now, architects have been limited to 2D models to present their works and concepts to clients. No matter how sophisticated, such a model is limited – and VR transcends all of those limitations. Virtual reality models can provide stakeholders with an immense amount of sensory data that they can use in determining the suitability of an architect’s individual vision.
Medicine
Up until recently, medical professionals had to rely on their virtually encyclopedic knowledge of human anatomy. Unfortunately, even the most informed physician would still have to tackle the unexpected, created by ordinary variations in the human form. Thanks to virtual reality, surgical planning can be made much easier and more precise than it has ever been.

Therapy
Virtual Reality Therapy (VRT) is already recognized by today’s mental health professionals. It has already been applied to treat military veterans suffering from symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). VR headsets have also been used in the treatment of people from all walks of life suffering from pain associated with phantom limbs.
Tourism
Thinking about a vacation? It might not be long before virtual reality can provide a nearly “picture perfect” approximation of the real thing. Many museums, important historical sites, and breathtaking vistas have already been recreated in today’s VR technology. Not surprisingly, the number of VR applications related to international tourism is growing every single day.
Although gaming is an obvious place for VR to get started in the popular imagination, it’s only the beginning. In truth, VR offers a tremendous number of imaginative applications. We’ve only reached the very beginning of what this technology is capable of!
