The Many Different Ways That Augmented Reality is Deployed Today
Augmented reality (AR) may be one of the most exciting ways in which embedded vision technology is deployed. Embedded vision systems provide crucial input of visual data for AR, allowing virtual images to be placed properly alongside physical objects around us.
The market for augmented reality is expected to be worth $61.39 billion by 2023, growing at a 55.71% compound annual growth rate. This explosive growth is driven in part from the advancing capabilities of the technology.
Augmented Reality Applications
While AR technology is still in its early stages, it’s already being used in a wide variety of ways.
- Gaming: one of the most recognizable examples of AR may be the game Pokemon Go. The ability to use AR technology in mobile apps leaves door open for a huge potential market in AR gaming.
- Marketing: marketing departments can leverage AR in a number of different ways. This could come in the form of product placement, such as placing virtual Ikea furniture in your living room, or through providing experiential events in the comfort of one’s home.
- Retail: the retail sector is leveraging AR technology in a number of ways. One example is the use of smart mirrors that allow shoppers to virtually try on clothes that they’re interested in, without actually having to try them on.
- Factory: AR has applications in the industrial sector too. On assembly lines in factories, workers wearing AR glasses can have assembly instructions displayed to them step by step to increase accuracy and efficiency.
- Warehouse: workers in large warehouses using wearable AR technology can get directions to find products during the sorting and transport of goods. This saves time searching for the desired product and eliminates human error.
- Aerospace & Defense: AR technology is being deployed in the aerospace and defense sectors, primarily in the form of Heads Up Displays (HUDs), which give pilots critical flight information right where and when they need it.
- Education: AR technology opens a world of possibility when it comes to education, especially in terms of giving students more immersive, engaging lessons. It can also be more effectively used to train employees with more realistic work scenarios.
- Tourism: mobile apps leveraging AR technology can help tourists find directions and desirable destinations. AR could also translate street signs and be used in museums to make displays more engaging.
AR is an exciting technology with a broad spectrum of potential uses spanning the industrial and consumer markets. Advances in embedded vision technology will be a critical factor in the growth of this industry, as AR relies on embedded vision systems to accurately display virtual images.
