The 2019 Engelberger Robotics Awards Winners

The #EngelbergerAward is named for the “father of #robotics,” Joseph F. Engelberger. #Congratuations to Catherine Morris and Dr. Howie Choset for being chosen as the 2019 winners!

On March 6, 2019, the Robotic Industries Association announced the winners of the 2019 Engelberger Robotics Awards. Catherine Morris, group leader and director of automotive sales at ATI Industrial Automation, along with Dr. Howie Choset, a robotics professor at Carnegie Mellon University, and co-founder of the Advanced Robotics for Manufacturing Institute, were granted the world’s most prestigious robotics honor.

Catherine Morris: Leadership

Catherine Morris was honored in the category of Leadership. She has been with ATI since 1995 and has positively impacted the success of robotics end users, manufacturers, and system integrators. Morris has helped build ATI into a global leader in robotic accessories and robot arm tooling.

She has served as an advocate of robotics and the important role that groups like RIA play within the robotics field. She has served in many roles with RIA, including Membership Committee Chair, Automate Show Committee Chair, and overall Chair of RIA. She’s the first woman to ever hold the role of Chair of RIA. Morris also now serves as a board member of RIA’s parent group, the Association for Advancing Automation (A3automate.org). Morris has served as a role model and mentor for women in robotics. She continues to display a high degree of process and mechatronic knowledge.

Dr. Howie Choset: Education

Dr. Howie Choset was honored in the category of Education. Dr. Choset has led research efforts to solve problems in surgery, manufacturing, infrastructure inspection, and search and rescue. Dr. Choset’s research group reduces complicated high-dimensional problems found in robotics into simpler problems to allow better design, analysis, and planning. His work has led to further research in mechanism design, path planning, motion planning, and estimation. This year, Dr. Choset chose to co-lead the formation of the Advanced Robotics for Manufacturing (ARM) Institute, a $250MM national institute advancing technology development and education for robotics in manufacturing.

Dr. Choset has also co-founded several companies during his career. These include Medrobotics for surgical systems, Hebi Robotics for modular robots, and Bito Robotics for autonomous guided vehicles. Dr. Choset’s FDA-approved robot has been used in the United States and Europe since 2015. He’s also the founding editor of the journal, Science Robotics.

About the Engelberger Award

The Engelberger Award is named for the “father of robotics,” Joseph F. Engelberger. Engelberger was the founder of the world’s first industrial robot manufacturer, Unimation, Inc. The awards are presented for excellence in technology development, application, education, and leadership in the robotics industry. Since its inception, 128 individuals from 17 nations have received the Engelberger Robotics Awards.
