How FIRST Inspires Students
It’s important for students to be aware of the magic of robotics, and one organization has been dedicated to this cause for over 30 years. It’s called FIRST – For Inspiration & Recognition of Science and Technology – and it was founded by Dean Kamen, the entrepreneur behind the Segway. Kamen had a vision of bringing robotics to young people in a way that had never been done before.
FIRST Exposes Students to Robotics
FIRST, a registered nonprofit, officially launched in 1989. Its main goal remains the development of accessible and innovative programs to help students connect with technology in exciting ways that might impact their future. It has motivated kids from kindergarten through high school to explore technology hands-on.
The organization is best known for the FIRST Robotics Competition, which includes district and regional events culminating in the FIRST Championship. The program emphasizes the ability of all participants, both technical and non-technical, to contribute to a team.
FIRST has had great success raising the profile of high technology among students:

Discover the potential cost savings of robotic automation over a 20-year system life
This calculator compares your current manual labor costs against the total cost of owning and operating a robotic system over its 20-year lifespan.
- More than 88% of participating students had more interest in school;
- 90% said they had more interest in challenging math or science courses;
- 90% felt more interested in attending college thanks to time with FIRST.
The nonprofit also organizes a number of other great events, including its Lego League and Lego League Jr. – the latter focused on introducing fundamental STEM concepts to youth aged 6-10.
FIRST is an Organization With Heart
Although technology is central to the FIRST mission, it also offers ethical lessons for kids to develop a stronger character. Two important values are exemplified at any FIRST event:
Gracious Professionalism: This is the idea that competition can take place with respect and kindness. The three pillars of knowledge, competition, and empathy work together – everyone is valued, while integrity and hard work are essential.
Coopertition: Coopertition is the idea that even competing teams can learn from one another. More knowledgeable, skilled, or accomplished members should strive to help others and each participant should learn from the perspectives of the rest.
It's no surprise FIRST is still going strong after almost 30 years. No doubt, it's helped thousands of kids from all backgrounds discover life-long interests in STEM!
