ARM Institute: Innovation, Education and More Jobs in AutomationThis past January, a new organization was formed, aimed at improving innovation, education and creating more jobs in the robotics industry. The Advanced Robotics for Manufacturing (ARM) Institute, currently with $253 million in public and private funding, is the first nationwide collaboration of its kind.

A New Kind of Mission

ARM pulls leadership and experience from academia, industry, government and nonprofits to not only boost robotic capabilities and availability, but to ensure the wave of automation won’t create widespread loss of manufacturing jobs.

ARM has four areas of focus in their mission:

  • Empower American workers to compete with low-wage workers abroad
  • Create and sustain new jobs to secure U.S. national prosperity
  • Lower the technical, operational and economic barriers for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), as well as large companies, to adopt robotics technologies
  • Assert U.S. leadership in advanced manufacturing

Bob Doyle, Director of Communications at A3, said "A3 is excited about the opportunity to partner with the ARM Institute. We're looking forward to working with the institute and our membership to strengthen U.S. manufacturing and support the robotics industry's continued success.”

A Call for Action

Two years ago, the A3 made a public call for action in response to a growing need for skilled labor in the automated workplace and a severe shortage of people qualified to fill those positions. The 'skills gap', as it’s now dubbed, is a serious threat to the manufacturing industry.

It finally appears that call for action has been answered. The ARM Institute's stated mission to empower the American worker through robotics education will be fundamentally important to eliminating that skills gap as automation alters the world we live in.

The ARM Institute, in conjunction with its many members, has a tall but important task in front of them.
