Embedded Vision in Remote Healthcare Monitoring ApplicationsRemote monitoring and diagnosis is an incredibly important and disruptive trend in the medical field. The ability to remotely care for patients increases the global accessibility of healthcare, improves the overall quality of healthcare, and effectively lowers the cost of healthcare services.

Embedded vision is at the heart of remote monitoring and diagnosis capabilities. While embedded vision systems have found their way into the medical field in a number of ways, there are two main ways it’s enabling remote monitoring and diagnosis.

Telemedicine Devices in Healthcare & Diagnostics

One of the most popular ways embedded vision is leveraged in healthcare is for telepresence robots. These robots, leveraging advanced vision systems, allow physicians and other medical professionals to essentially be in more than one place at one time, remotely treating patients when they cannot provide care in-person.

Embedded vision has been used in remote monitoring devices in patients’ homes to record and transmit biometric data along with chronic condition statuses. It can also be used in electronic intensive care units (eICU) for remote diagnosis and care of rural patients with little access to physicians or specialists.

Smartphones May Be a Vital Diagnostic Tool in the Future

A few innovators in the embedded vision space are transforming the everyday smartphone into a highly sophisticated diagnostic tool. In one example, a smartphone can be equipped with an additional sensor with a linear variable filter glued on top as a clip-on attachment. This quick and easy assembly can then conduct optical spectronoscopy.

Following the same example above, a smartphone with these attachments could identify biomarkers for nutrition, cardiac health, sepsis, cancer, pregnancy, drugs, hormones and infectious disease. This type of system brings spectronoscopy outside of the clinic or lab environment – freeing doctors to diagnose and begin treatment for serious illnesses like Zika or Ebola in remote locations without the typical clinical or laboratory equipment.

Embedded vision technology may make the smartphone an indispensable diagnostic tool in the future, helping expand the accessibility of highly technical healthcare treatments like spectronoscopy.

Remote monitoring and diagnosis is a transformative trend in healthcare. The way healthcare is administered may be completely changing. Embedded vision is playing a defining role in the development of remote monitoring and diagnosis.
