Seeing the Unseen: How EyeVision Thermo is transforming thermal inspection across Industries

POSTED 03/13/2025

Imagine being able to see heat, analyze its patterns, and detect even the slightest irregularities. This is the power of thermal imaging, and with EyeVision’s Thermal Package, this power is harnessed to revolutionize quality control and inspection processes across industries.

From gas flares to industrial precision

Thermal dynamics play a crucial role in many industrial applications. With EyeVision Thermo, you can analyze heat distribution, detect hotspots, and identify inconsistencies in materials and production processes. For instance, in the automotive industry, thermal imaging is critical for inspecting components like gas turbine blades. These blades endure extreme temperatures and forces, and even the smallest defect can lead to catastrophic failure. EyeVision Active Thermal Imaging (impulse or Lock-In Thermal Imaging) allows manufacturers to inspect every stage of the blade’s production—from casting to the application of thermal barrier coatings. The software’s drag-and-drop commands make it easy to program inspections, ensuring that every blade meets the highest quality standards.

Detecting the unseen: void inspections in manufacturing

In manufacturing, not all defects are visible to the naked eye. Take, for example, dashboard production (or any other foam based structure) in the automotive industry. The dashboard is made using a special foam, which is poured into a mold and expanded through an exothermal process. However, if the foam doesn’t expand correctly, voids can  form, compromising the structure. Over time, exposure to sunlight and temperature changes can make these defects visible to the end user.

This is where non-destructive detection (NDT) comes into play. Thermal inspections can capture images at specific   intervals (e.g. form multiple images per second to minutes depending on the need of the material) and highlight voids   as blue spots in the thermal image. By implementing EyeVision Thermo, manufacturers can ensure that dashboards   and other foam-based components are free of such defects, preventing costly recalls and ensuring high-quality   products.

Beyond dashboards, thermal imaging is also crucial in the inspection of printed circuit boards (PCBs). Hidden defects   such as faulty solder joints or overheating components can compromise performance and longevity. EyeVision   Thermo’s passive IR capabilities analyze the thermal flow within these materials, detecting issues at an early stage. This      prevents costly failures and ensures the reliability of electronic devices.

Lock-In Thermography: seeing below the surface

Lock-in thermography takes thermal inspection a step further. By applying a heat pulse, this technique allows manufacturers to inspect the internal layers of a material. This is particularly useful in automotive painting processes, where it helps determine the number of layers and their thickness. Identifying inconsistencies early ensures uniform quality and prevents defects from reaching the final product.

From steel to skyscrapers

The applications of EyeVision Thermo extend far beyond manufacturing. In building physics, the software can inspect insulation or detect heat leaks in structures. In process engineering, it monitors the thermal efficiency of machinery, ensuring optimal performance.

One standout feature is the software’s ability to analyze non-transparent materials, such as package seals and glue in carton materials. For instance, it ensures that a beer bottle package maintains its integrity during transport, guaranteeing that products reach customers safely. This level of precision is made possible by EyeVision Thermo’s advanced thermal imaging commands, which are as intuitive as they are powerful.

A Camera for every challenge

EyeVision Thermo supports a wide range of thermal imaging cameras, from the compact EyeCheck Thermo to industry leaders like FLIR, Optris, AT Sensors and others. Whether inspecting a gas turbine blade or a delicate PCB, the software seamlessly integrates with hardware, providing a versatile and reliable solution.

The Future of thermal inspections

Thermal imaging is no longer a niche technology—it’s a necessity in today’s fast-paced, quality-driven world. With EyeVision Thermo, industries can unlock new levels of precision, efficiency, and reliability. From gas flares to automotive dashboards, the software reveals the invisible, ensuring that every detail meets the highest standards.
