Enhancing Diamond Saw Blade Inspection with Advanced Laser Scanning and Vision Technology
Dual 3D camera system detects dimensional deviations on saw blades during the running process
Challenge
A manufacturer aimed to improve the accuracy and efficiency of inspecting diamond saw blades during production. The goal was to capture detailed dimensional data, including gear geometries, blade width, cutting width, angularity, and diameter, in real time. Existing methods lacked the precision and speed needed for immediate quality assessment and process adjustments.
Solution
To address these requirements, the manufacturer collaborated with senswork and Plattner to develop an advanced inspection system. The solution involved a measuring station equipped with a double-head laser scanner system, capable of recording all critical dimensions in real time as the blades moved through the production line. The dual laser heads ensured full coverage of the blade geometry, enabling precise measurement of complex features. At the same time, VisionCommander® image processing software analyzed the captured data in real time, evaluating all relevant parameters and providing immediate feedback on dimensional accuracy.
Implementation
The system was carefully designed and calibrated to match the specific geometries of the diamond saw blades, ensuring consistent high-precision measurements. It was then seamlessly integrated into the production line, allowing continuous monitoring during manufacturing. VisionCommander® was configured to process incoming data and instantly detect deviations from specified tolerances. Following integration, the system underwent extensive testing and optimization to ensure reliable and accurate performance under real production conditions.
Results
The implemented solution significantly improved the inspection process by delivering highly accurate measurements of all critical dimensions and enabling real-time data evaluation for immediate process adjustments. It also increased efficiency by automating data capture and analysis, reducing the need for manual inspection. Additionally, the system can be adapted to different saw blade diameters, operates with a 3D profile scanner resolution of 5 µm, and completes each measuring sequence in approximately 20 seconds. Overall, the comprehensive data collection and analysis enhance quality control, leading to improved product consistency and longer blade lifespan.
