In connector manufacturing, precise pin positioning is essential to ensure reliable assembly onto circuit boards. While effective to a limited extent, these gauges are inflexible and require significant time for inspection. They are also unable to detect certain defects, such as missing, broken, bent, or abraded pins, which can result in undetected quality issues and potential damage during assembly.
Solution
To overcome these limitations, senswork developed a virtual connector gauge that replaces mechanical testing with a camera-based inspection approach. Using a high-resolution camera system, the solution creates a precise virtual image of the connector interface, such as the PCB or socket. Based on this digital representation, the system verifies whether all pins are correctly positioned and aligned, while simultaneously detecting shape defects and structural deviations.
Results
The implementation of the virtual connector gauge significantly improves inspection speed and flexibility, achieving evaluation times as fast as 20 milliseconds. Its contact-free measurement approach eliminates mechanical wear and reduces maintenance requirements. In addition, the system can be easily adapted to different connector types, providing a versatile and reliable solution for modern manufacturing environments.
