Robotic Paint Stripping for Aircraft Parts
SwRI has developed two custom robotic systems to automatically remove paint from large aircraft components in a manner that is safe, efficient, and cost effective. The robot is supported by an overhead gantry structure, a combination of custom and commercially-available technology, that allows its manipulator to move around the aircraft components from above. The system uses a cornstarch-based biodegradable media to remove paint from sensitive substrates such as composites and thin-skinned aluminum.
