Zivid 2+ R-series 3D Cameras Deliver Speed Breakthrough for Warehousing Robots

Zivid announces the immediate availability of its next generation 3D camera lineup; the Zivid 2+ R-series - designed to address the most demanding robotic pick, place and manipulation applications within e-commerce, logistics, and manufacturing.

The Zivid 2+R-series enables major improvements to robot cycle times even with the most challenging items, including shiny and transparent objects. Combined with exceptional robustness to varying ambient light and temperature conditions, the Zivid 2+ R-series delivers higher and more reliable pick rates in real world production environments – minimizing mispicks, double picks, drops, and damage. The new built-in 2D camera, optimized for AI-based segmentation, saves cost and simplifies the robot cell.

All cameras feature a reinvented combined 3D and 2D imaging technology. With a 3x speed improvement over Zivid 2+, it captures true-to-reality point clouds on shiny and transparent objects in under 150 milliseconds. This means it is fast enough to not limit the cycle time of a piece-picking robot. For parcel sorting and induction, a wide range of parcel types can be captured in 50 milliseconds. This paves the way forward for pick rates of 2,000 picks per hour.

The new built-in 2D camera can match the performance of state-of-the art industrial 2D cameras. It delivers true and stable colors, high contrast and minimal aliasing artifacts. Combined with remarkable immunity to variations in ambient light it is ideally suited for AI-based segmentation. This enables a higher probability of correct segmentation with the use of smaller training sets. The system is simplified with perfect pixel mapping meaning there is no need for intrinsic 2D to 3D calibration. The built-in 2D imaging capability removes the need for an external 2D camera, illumination domes, cables and mounts. This is a substantial cost-saving and simplification of the typical robot cell system.

For manufacturing applications, Zivid 2+ R-series offers both higher speed and improved performance to handle extremely shiny and reflective metallic parts. With a 4x acquisition time speed-up robot-mounted configuration is now even more viable. Better CAD matching is achieved with a brand-new 3D reconstruction engine which significantly suppresses reflection artifacts and delivers more correct 3D points.

The Zivid 2+ R-series come in three variants that address a wide range of applications in logistics, e-commerce, and manufacturing: The MR60, MR130, and the LR110. MR60 offers robot-mounted flexibility plus exceptional point cloud quality. This makes it ideal for high precision manipulation in applications such as assembly and robot guiding. MR130 is designed to perfectly address high-speed piece-picking, parcel induction, and bin-picking from standard sized bins and totes. LR110 offers very high-quality results coupled with a generous FOV that is ideally suited for robot-mounted bin-picking from large bins or multiple bins.
