New Permanent Magnet Guide and Reference Published by Association for Advancing Automation, Motion Control & Motors Technology Sector

POSTED 10/27/2022

ANN ARBOR, MI  The Association for Advancing Automation (A3) along with their Permanent Magnet Division (PMD) of A3’s Motion Control & Motors sector has published the Permanent Magnet Guide and Reference. The Guide and Reference is a practical source of information about permanent magnetic products, their specification, and application.

Authored by Steve Constantinides of Magnetics & Materials LLC, and edited by Mike Devine of Adams Magnetic Products, with help from other key PMD committee members, the book includes the latest development of new materials and changes within the magnet industry and is much anticipated and needed by industry.

Originally released in 1987 as the 31-page “Permanent Magnet Guideline”, this new 111-page version brings the material up to date, adds content for more thorough explanation of concepts, selectively expands beyond the basics, and updates units with emphasis on the SI unit system while retaining the utility of the cgs-emu system.

“We’re glad to see this new guide and reference available for both producers and users of permanent magnets,” said Mike Devine, Senior Applications Engineer, Adams Magnetic Products, and current Chair of the PMD. “While not intended as a replacement for textbooks on the science of magnetics, it is useful for engineers new to the field, business management teams incorporating magnets into their products, quality assurance personnel performing tests, and more.”

The Guide and Reference contains material around inspection, specification, and use. It also will help all parties involved with permanent magnets utilize a standard vocabulary, terminology, and symbols. Readers will also find benefits and limitations of each material.

“This publication comes at a time when the demand for permanent magnets is high due to the electrification of components in the industrial space, including motors, plus the growing market for electronics and consumer goods. Getting this information in the hands of a wide array of industries will help them better understand and effectively utilize magnetic materials, assemblies, and systems.” said Dana Whalls, Vice President, A3.

About Permanent Magnet Division

The Permanent Magnet Division Committee was originally founded in 1959 and operated as the Magnetic Materials Producers Association (MMPA). In 2003, MMPA became the International Magnetics Association (IMA), expanding its scope and operations in recognition of the global nature of the magnetic industry. In 2007, IMA became a part of the Small Motor Manufacturers Association (SMMA). In 2015, SMMA merged with the Motion Control & Motor Association (MCMA) – which is now A3 Motion Control & Motors. PMD is an active part of A3, which supports the work of the PMD and the greater good it brings to the industry.
