Our major research areas are advanced manufacturing, autonomy, energy and power, fuels and combustion, human technologies, hypersonics, materials, sensors and software systems, structures and systems, and sustainment. UDRI also contributes to the fulfillment of the University’s commitments to education, research and public service through the involvement of students, faculty and external partners. Established as the research arm of the University of Dayton in 1956, UDRI accounted for 95% of the University's $238.6 million in sponsored research in fiscal year 2023. UDRI is ranked first among all colleges and universities in the nation for sponsored materials research, according to the National Science Foundation. The Research Institute also ranks fifth in the U.S. and first in Ohio for research and development sponsored by the Department of Defense.
