Clearer Cell Edge Welding Inspection With 3D Laser Profiling

Cell edge welding remains one of the most difficult areas to inspect on a battery line. The transition from flat surface to curved edge creates unstable imaging conditions, and small defects often blend into the background. As production speeds increase, maintaining consistent inspection becomes even harder.

Persistent Inspection Problems

Most defects at the cell edge are small and easily obscured. Blowouts, dents, splatter, and micro-bumps generate noise that blurs the boundary between normal texture and actual faults. Angled surfaces such as the corner radius and top cover limit the visibility of conventional 2D cameras, making offset welding and incomplete welds difficult to confirm. At high line speeds, the weld passes across changing geometry in milliseconds, reducing the reliability of traditional inspection tools.

How 3D Laser Profiling Addresses These Issues

A 3D laser profiler captures full surface geometry instead of relying solely on contrast. This allows the system to separate physical defects from texture noise and maintain stable inspection across changing shapes.

The profiler outputs both 3D height data and 2D intensity data in a single scan, making bumps, pits, dents, and weld offsets identifiable even on reflective or uneven surfaces. With detection capability down to 0.2 × 0.2 × 0.2 mm, the system can identify the small variations that often go undetected in 2D imaging. It also supports scanning speeds up to 320 mm/s, providing consistent results along the curved cell edge without losing detail.
