Sappi Selects Cognex for Web Inspection
POSTED 06/14/2001
NATICK, Mass. - (BUSINESS WIRE) - June 12, 2001: Cognex Corporation, the world's leading supplier of machine vision systems, announced today that Sappi, the world's leading producer of coated, wood-free fine paper, has integrated Cognex's SmartView™ ICN web inspection system at their manufacturing facility in Gratkorn, Austria.
Sappi will use the SmartView ICN system to perform quality inspection on its production of fine paper, which is used in high-quality publications, such as annual reports, and brochures. The Cognex vision system will inspect the paper for defects such as edge cracks, holes, light spots, oil spots, wrinkles and dark spots at production speeds of more than 4,000 feet per minute. SmartView's Winder Advisor system installed at the re-reeler will use the defect information to stop the winder at severe defect locations, allowing operators to make repairs before the paper goes into the coating machine.
"SmartView allows manufacturers like Sappi to not only inspect defects at full production speeds, but also reduce the number of web breaks and increase winder throughput," said Markku Jaaskelainen, General Manager of Cognex's Surface Inspection Systems Division. "Process improvements like these are designed to enhance a company's efficiency and product quality, which results in improved overall output."
SmartView ICN is a state-of-the-art web inspection system that is used to automatically detect, identify and display defects in paper and other materials as they are being produced. Cognex has sold over 100 SmartView ICN systems since its release in February, 2000, making it the most successful product launch in the history of Cognex's Surface Inspection Systems Division.
