RVSI Gets Data Matrix Printed Circuit Board Traceability Order
Permanent, 2-D bar codes are beginning to replace traditional paper labels on circuit boards
NASHUA, NEW HAMPSHIRE - January 22, 2004 - Robotic Vision Systems, Inc. (RVSI) (RVSI.PK) today said its Acuity CiMatrix Division had received an order from a major, tier-one automotive electronics supplier for machine vision equipment to track and trace printed circuit boards. The order has a value of $175,000.
RVSI's HawkEye 1500-series smart camera readers and DMxVerifer+ direct part mark quality verifiers will be used in the application in which RVSI equipment will read and verify Data Matrix two-dimensional bar codes that encode lot, date, and model numbers for the automotive electronics products being manufactured at the facility.
‘‘The application of our products and the speed with which the customer is moving toward Data Matrix implementation makes this sale quite noteworthy,’‘ said Ray England, Vice President - Worldwide Sales and Marketing for Acuity CiMatrix. ‘‘Printed circuit boards are traditionally tracked and traced during manufacturing using standard bar codes printed on paper labels. Those labels fall off, peel or crack under heat, and occupy a large amount of valuable space. Moreover, traditional bar codes store very little information, so their utility as a tracking system is very limited.
‘‘By contrast, a Data Matrix occupying a few square millimeters can contain a precise manufacturing history of the circuit board,’‘ Mr.
Dr. John Agapakis, Sr. Vice President - Products for RVSI Acuity CiMatrix, said the selection of RVSI's direct part mark readers and verifiers will help ensure reliable marking and reading of Data Matrix marks under the real-world conditions of a manufacturing floor. ‘‘Circuit boards are read at multiple sites and the low-contrast marks must be imaged at a high speed,’‘ Dr. Agapakis said. ‘‘No two read points can be exactly alike with regard to lighting, environment, or product presentation, and so equipment that has the robustness and flexibility to perform reliably under such conditions is an absolute requirement. This customer did a rigorous evaluation of multiple vendors' equipment before settling on RVSI. We had already proven our effectiveness in one of the customer's Asian manufacturing sites; we were pleased to have been selected for this second installation.’‘
