RVSI Gets $1.4 Million of Orders for Semiconductor Inspection Systems

POSTED 05/29/2002

RVSI orders include cancellation of systems from a competitor

CANTON, MASSACHUSETTS - May 29, 2002 -Robotic Vision Systems, Inc. (RVSI) (NASDAQ: ROBV) today said its Semiconductor Equipment Group has received orders totaling $1.4 million for multiple semiconductor inspection systems from an Asian-based subcontract semiconductor assembly organization. 'The order is important for two reasons: first, because it is further evidence of the revival of the semiconductor capital equipment market,' said Michael Gray, Vice President - Sales and Marketing for the Semiconductor Equipment Group. 'The more important reason is that one of these orders was originally awarded to a competitor offering lower priced equipment.  Upon further investigation by the customer, it was determined that the competitor 's equipment was unable to reliably find defects in advanced BGA packages. The customer has cancelled that order and awarded the entire purchase to RVSI.'

Machine-vision-based semiconductor inspection systems are used by chip manufacturers to examine packaged integrated circuits. Depending upon options, such systems can cost up to $500,000 each.  RVSI's systems check to ensure that leads or ball-grid arrays on finished integrated circuits meet specification, and also perform package visual inspection to find surface defects on parts. RVSI's patented, laser-based 3-D technology provides the highest quality of machine vision available for connector, lead, and ball-grid-array inspection.
