RVSI Gets $1.1 Million Order for Semiconductor Device Assembly Line
POSTED 09/05/2000
CANTON, MASSACHUSETTS - September 5, 2000 -Robotic Vision Systems, Inc. today said it has received a $1.1 million order for its fully integrated ball-attach equipment for back-end assembly chip production in ball grid array and chip scale packages. The sale was made by RVSI's Vanguard division in Tucson, Arizona.
Semiconductor manufacturers are increasingly designing their ICs to incorporate ball-grid arrays which use tiny, pre-formed spheres of solder that take the place of traditional wire leads, allowing more connections per chip and a significant reduction in the size of an assembled semiconductor package. Chip-scale packages are used in applications such as cellular telephones, where size and weight are paramount considerations. Tucson, Arizona-based RVSI Vanguard manufactures equipment, including the VAi 5300 and 6300 that places balls on grid array semiconductor packages.
"This order continues the trend of manufacturers purchasing a complete assembly line for ball attach from Vanguard rather than selecting equipment from multiple vendors," said Michel Epsztein, President - RVSI Vanguard. "Our expertise in both grid array assembly and equipment integration was a major factor in this customer's purchase decision."
The VAi 6300 Ball Placement System offers the ability to process semiconductor packages with the lowest possible cost of ownership of any ball placement system available today. It supports a wide variety of BGA formats including single devices in boats or trays and strip devices in magazines with the capability to process chip scale packages, plastic ball grid array, ceramic ball grid array, tape ball grid array, and connector packages.
