NASHUA, N.H., Dec. 9 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Robotic Vision Systems, Inc. (RVSI) (OTC Bulletin Board: RVSI.OB - News) today said its Acuity CiMatrix Division has been awarded a subcontract from Keane Federal Systems to provide support to the Department of Defense for the Unique Identification (UID) Policy. The base year of Keane's contract is valued at approximately $2 million and includes four one-year options with a contract ceiling of $9.4 million. RVSI's subcontract covers a period of performance of one year with options for renewal, and commences immediately.

RVSI's subcontract role is to provide the Department of Defense with the ability to fully assess the impacts of the UID implementation on its Automatic Identification infrastructure and as well ensure that recommended alternatives for upgrading current systems can accommodate full-scale deployment of UID data capture capabilities. Additionally, this contract will support the investigation of industry technologies and practices that are currently emerging in the commercial sector for support of UID data capture.

‘‘As the inventor of Data Matrix (see inset) and the organization with more experience implementing Data-Matrix-based unit level traceability programs than all other companies in the world combined, RVSI is uniquely positioned to assist the Department of Defense in its UID implementation,’‘ said Pat Costa, Chairman and CEO of RVSI. ‘‘We understand the importance and value that Unique Identification will provide to the DoD. Our four-step process, termed MVRC, was developed to simplify the inter-related activities and requirements -- marking, verification, reading and communicating -- of data. Each activity must be assessed not only on its own merits, but in how it complements and affects the other components of traceability.’‘

The Department of Defense announced its Unique Identification Policy in July 2003 and has subsequently made a commitment to implement the use of Data Matrix symbology as the technical baseline for item identification. Under MIL-STD-130L, items procured by the Department of Defense that meet criteria associated with cost, serial management, or status as mission-critical, are required to be permanently marked with a unique identifier using, at a minimum, a Data Matrix 2-D machine readable code.

RVSI Acuity CiMatrix will provide DoD Unique Identification (UID) studies and conduct technology assessments for the Department of Defense Program Management Team via the contract arrangement with KFSI. The execution of this contract will occur on a task order basis as DoD organizations fund the individual tasks contained in the contract.
