Radiant Demonstrates Advanced Vision for In-Line Electronics Assembly Verification at IPC APEX EXPO

POSTED 01/31/2018

REDMOND, Wash. – January 31, 2018 — Radiant Vision Systems, a leading provider of high-resolution photometric imaging solutions, announces that it will demonstrate its new INSPECT.assembly system for in-line electronics assembly verification at booth #3815 during IPC APEX EXPO. The exhibition takes place February 27-March 1, 2018, at the San Diego Convention Center in San Diego, California, U.S.A.

Radiant Vision Systems is the leading provider of light and color measurement solutions for consumer electronics displays, backlit components, and light sources. Its ProMetric® imaging systems are engineered to capture the most precise, meaningful variations in highly-detailed images to evaluate luminance, chromaticity, pixel-level defects, and more. Incorporating its technical advantages in light measurement, Radiant now develops solutions to address inspection applications that have been unmet by traditional machine vision. These advanced vision solutions provide an alternative imaging platform to enable automated inspection of complex assemblies.

Announced on November 1, 2017, Radiant’s new INSPECT.assembly system is the first turnkey inspection system to leverage the company’s high-performance imaging technology for inspection of electromechanical components directly on the assembly line. The system rivals human visual acuity for detecting defects while quantifying visual data for automated operations, bridging the gap between human and machine vision inspection for the most challenging assemblies. INSPECT.assembly is a fully-integrated machine vision solution that utilizes a Radiant Vision Systems ProMetric® imaging photometer, bright field lighting, and configurable inspection software to detect subtle, low-contrast defects. The system performs a range of inspections, simultaneously or in sequence, with tools for determining presence, position, and routing of cables, fasteners, connectors, screws, and other internal components.

“At the final stages of production where connected assemblies are verified, human inspectors remain the primary inspection method,” says Davis Bowling, Regional Sales Manager at Radiant for assembly verification applications. “To apply an automated solution in these contexts, the technology must offer the same level of visual acuity and judgment to ensure failures do not escape or result after goods are shipped. A cable that is routed away from its guide may be pinched or damaged with repeated device use. A loose connector may detach with vibration. These issues may cause a device to fail after it has left the manufacturing facility, resulting in a return or potentially a broader product recall. The INSPECT.assembly’s imaging capability combined with custom-configured software allow manufacturers to catch subtle errors like these that human inspectors, standard machine vision systems, and even functional testing may miss.”

Occupying the same physical footprint as a human operator on the line, the INSPECT.assembly system can be added to moving conveyers, adjusting to heights from 525-950 mm. The system’s INSPECT Software is pre-configured to the specific parameters of each part, providing precise data control while maintaining adaptability to line changeover. Each INSPECT.assembly is configured by Radiant’s advanced vision engineers, allowing customers to realize their exact inspection tolerances while minimizing set-up time.

Attendees of IPC APEX EXPO will see live demonstrations of the new INSPECT.assembly station evaluating assemblies on a moving conveyer, and discuss applications with Radiant’s advanced vision solutions team.
