Nello Zuech Receives 2000 Automated Imaging Achievement Award
POSTED 03/22/2000
Nello Zuech, President of Vision Systems International, Inc., was presented by the Automated Imaging Association (AIA) with the 2000 Automated Imaging Achievement Award at the 8th Annual AIA Business Conference, held February 9-11, 2000 in Orlando, FL. The award honors industry leaders for outstanding contributions in promoting market acceptance of industrial and/or scientific imaging.
When accepting the award, Zuech shared his thoughts on the growth of the machine vision industry. "While involved in electro-optics for virtually my entire working life, it wasn't until 1970 that I was bitten and infected by the imaging 'bug.' When I think back on the early technology (PDP-11, teletypewriter, massive tape storage decks) and my early new business development activities with such primitive technology, it amazes me how far we have come. Despite it not being very rigorous, that early technology was used on a number of demonstration projects that have since developed into key imaging markets - optical character recognition (OCR), digital radiography, disease-specific diagnostics, TV interferometry, optical computing, and, yes, machine vision."
For the past 17 years, Zuech has been operating as an independent engineering and marketing consultant in the fields of electronic imaging, machine vision, electro-optics, intelligent sensors, and non-destructive evaluation. His practice has included assisting prospective users of the technology in the evaluation of applications and vendors, as well as performing a variety of business development assignments for those companies offering the technology. These assignments have given him exceptionally broad exposure to a wide range of applications in many manufacturing industries.

"On a personal note, I want to say that I can only hope that all of you who are making a career out of machine vision have had as much fun as I have," Zuech said. "To be recognized by one's peers and receive this award, while enjoying what I do as much as I do, almost doesn't seem right!"
Prior to starting Vision Systems International in 1983, Mr. Zuech served as Marketing Director of ORS Automation and National Sales Manager of EMR Photoelectric - both companies were early entrants in the electronic imaging industry.
In addition to writing AIA's annual machine vision market study, Mr. Zuech has written numerous articles that have appeared in various trade periodicals. He is a member of AIA, World Bank Consultancy Registry, SME College of Fellows, IEEE and IEEE Consulting Group, SPIE, and Tau Beta Pi. Mr. Zuech was a charter member of the Machine Vision Association where he served as past Chairman and received the Chairman's Award in 1994. The Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) granted him Certification Stature as a Manufacturing Engineer, Machine Vision Engineer.
"We're pleased to add Nello's name to the list of industry leaders who have received this prestigious award. AIA has benefited from his machine vision knowledge and guidance for years, having him conduct our annual machine vision market study. His commitment to the industry has brought it greater exposure and success," observed Jeffrey A. Burnstein, AIA's Executive Director.
