Grasshopper3 Camera

POSTED 03/04/2013

rong>Point Grey’s New Grasshopper3 Camera Is World’s First to Combine CCD Technology with the High Bandwidth USB 3.0 Interface

Richmond, BC, Canada – Point Grey, a world-leading designer and manufacturer of innovative, high-performance digital cameras, today announced its latest innovation in imaging with the Grasshopper3, the world’s first machine vision camera to combine CCD technology with a USB 3.0 interface. The Grasshopper3Grasshopper3 fulfills a growing demand from machine vision and in life science applications for a combination of highly sensitive CCD global shutter technology, high bandwidth, and a plug-and play-interface, all at an attractive price point.

The first Grasshopper3 model, GS3-U3-28S4, has a maximum frame rate of 26 FPS and features the Sony 2.8 MP, ICX687 CCD sensor with its excellent image quality and near IR response. This is made possible by Sony’s proprietary pixel structure and microlens design which improves photon to electron conversion at each photodiode. Improving quantum efficiency increases light sensitivity when compared to a pixel with the same well depth or saturation capacity.  Subsequent Grasshopper3 models are also based on CCD and include another 2.8 MP variant, a 6 MP and a 9.1 MP model.  Like all Point Grey USB 3.0 cameras, the Grasshopper3 is built on an  FPGA and frame buffer-based architecture to provide optimal reliability, a rich set of features, and a full image processing pipeline including color interpolation, look up table, gamma correction, pixel binning functionality, and much more.

“The combination USB 3.0’s high data throughput and Point Grey’s selection of large format CCD sensors means the Grasshopper3 has the added potential of being a powerful, easy-to-use, and cost-effective alternative to Camera Link and dual GigE LAG solutions.” explains Michael Gibbons, Director of Sales and Marketing. Mr. Gibbons adds, “We are excited to address a broad spectrum of applications including print inspection, 3D measurement, flow scanning cytometry, fluorescence imaging, and much more with the Grasshopper3 camera.”

The Grasshopper3 GS3-U3-28S4 (color and monochrome) model is list priced at USD $1295 and EUR €995 and is available to order now from Point Grey and its network of distributors.
