Eugene Arthurs, SPIE Director, Elected to Board of Directors at Edmund Optics®

July 29, 2008, Barrington, N.J. Eugene G. Arthurs, executive director of SPIE, the International Society for Optics and Photonics, has been elected to the Board of Directors of Edmund Optics®. As a board member, he will serve on the corporation's Executive Search, Nominating and Sales and Marketing Committees.
Dr. Arthurs, who has a long and distinguished career in the international optical industry, has been with SPIE for the past nine years, and previously served as president and CEO of Cleveland Crystals, Inc., where he notably increased sales and profitability during his tenure.
Dr. Arthurs' considerable experience in managing, organizing and structurally enhancing optical technology organizations while planning innovative methods to help bolster revenues and profitability throughout his career are expected to favorably influence Edmund Optics future efforts from sales through manufacturing.

Earlier, Dr. Arthurs served as president of Oriel Instruments, Inc., formerly Oriel Corp., Stratford, Ct., and a director at LOT-Oriel GmbH and at Andor Technology Ltd. Since 1983, Dr. Arthurs served as technical director of Oriel Corporation, then following his promotion the following year to vice president of marketing and technology also served as a director of Oriel Scientific, UK, and a director and founder of Andor Technology Ltd. At Oriel, he rebuilt the company's marketing and engineering departments, and notably helped increase revenues during a market downturn and through a company transition.
He was also a manager of semiconductor systems business at Quantronix Corp., Hauppauge, N.Y., headed the laser department at Barr & Stroud Ltd., Glasgow, Scotland, and was a strategic planner for Pilkington PLC, St. Helens, England.
Dr. Arthurs received his Ph.D. and B.Sc. degrees in Physics at Queens University, Belfast. He is a member of the Society of Photographic Instrumentation Engineers (currently SPIE), the Optical Society of America, AAAS, IEEE LEOS, and the Council on Optical Radiation Measurement. He also served on the board of the Photochemical Research Center, and on the Advisory Board of the Scottish Universities Physics Alliance.
