Device Dynamics Selects RVSI Inspection System

POSTED 09/24/2001

Tape-and-Reel Service Provider Raises the Quality Assurance Bar

CANTON, MASSACHUSETTS - September 24, 2001 - Robotic Vision Systems, Inc. (RVSI)(NASDAQ: ROBV) today said its Semiconductor Equipment Group has received an order from industry-leader Device Dynamics for an inspection system to provide quality assurance during semiconductor packing.  The system has been installed in the company's facility in California. 'The capability to provide our customers with state-of-the-art, 3-D laser-based semiconductor package inspection places Device Dynamics in a superior category of tape-and-reel service providers,' states Jay Stebbins, President of Device Dynamics. 'We realized that to be the leader in the tape-and-reel market it was necessary to offer a higher level of quality assurance to our customers. This system will be a strong addition to our existing complement of RVSI tape-and-reel equipment and supports our commitment to provide the highest standards of quality assurance to our customers.'

Machine-vision-based semiconductor inspection systems are used by chip manufacturers to examine packaged integrated circuits. RVSI's systems check to ensure that leads or ball-grid arrays on finished integrated circuits meet specification, and also perform package visual inspection to find surface defects on parts. RVSI's patented, laser-based 3-D technology provides the highest quality of machine vision available for connector, lead, and ball-grid-array inspection.

'The strategic importance of this order is that during an industry downturn, we are expanding the market for our inspection systems,' said Michael Gray, Vice President - Sales and Marketing of RVSI Electronics. 'RVSI is trusted as the standard by both semiconductor device manufacturers and sub-contractors for quality assurance. With this selection, Device Dynamics is taking this standard to the tape-and-reel business.  We feel this could signify a trend towards a new application for laser-based inspection.'
