ASCII Protocol to Control Cameras in Embedded Systems
POSTED 11/01/2011
Emb
edded vision systems contain sensor and processor modules. Each Photonfocus sensor module can be connected directly to the processor unit thanks to the well-defined module interface. In machine vision systems DSP's and FPGA's are used as processor units. In certain cases pre-processor units are also used to support the DSP's.
Very simple register based ASCII control of the sensor modules is required in embedded vision systems, as frequently the resources for a complex communication protocol in the process hardware (e.g. FPGA's) are not available or cannot be provided.
Answering this requirement Photonfocus has developed a register based ASCII protocol to control the sensor module and will implement it in the 4 Megapixel OEM-Module. The ASCII protocol is based on the GenICam standard and over time will be implemented in all Photonfocus sensor modules. This enables the user to easily interchange different Photonfocus sensor modules as the soft- and hardware interfaces are identical. Alternatively the C-source code of the PFRemote SDK can be compiled to use the communication protocol of Photonfocus modules.
In addition to the sensor modules Photonfocus also offers DSP modules such as the TI (Texas Instruments) C6415/C6455, the daVinci DM6435, the Blackfin DSPs and FPGA pre-processor modules based on the Xilinx FPGA's. All mentioned modules can be modified to meet specific customer requirements.
