ABB Robotics Selects Cognex Vision Sensors for High-speed Robot Guidance

POSTED 03/18/2002

NATICK, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 18, 2002--Cognex Corporation (NASDAQ - CGNX), the world's leading supplier of machine vision systems, announced today that ABB Robotics North America, one of the world's largest suppliers of industrial robots for factory automation, has selected Cognex In-Sight™ vision sensors to guide their high-speed 'pick and place' FlexPicker™ robots.

ABB's Consumer Industries Group in Westminster, CO, will integrate In-Sight vision sensors into the FlexPicker robots, which are designed for light industrial applications such as food and pharmaceutical packaging. The In-Sight sensors, equipped with PatFind(R) geometric pattern recognition software, will enable the robots to pick randomly oriented objects on a moving conveyor or turntable and place them into wrappers and cartons at a rate of more than 150 objects per minute.

In-Sight vision sensors are low-cost, high-performance, on-line inspection devices that are used to automatically measure parts, verify the correct assembly of products, identify parts, and guide production equipment. The In-Sight product family offers a broad range of vision sensors. Standard features include built-in Ethernet communications, a full library of proven Cognex vision tools, and a spreadsheet interface for fast, easy set-up.

ABB is a global leader in power and automation technologies that enable utility and industry customers to improve their performance while lowering their environmental impact. ABB has 160,000 employees in more than 100 countries.
