Color Vision: An Excerpt from The Machine Vision Market 2001
Color-Based Vision Processors
The North American respondents who supply vision processors suggested that 5.1% of their revenues and 3.2% of their units were for the sale of systems operating on color cues. In 1999 the general-purpose machine vision companies suggested that 7.1% of their revenues and 3.7% of their units came from the sale of systems involving color. In 1999 this represented $25.1M and 879 units while this year these sales represent $23.4M and 1209 units. Last year the average price was $28.6K while this year it was $19.4K. It is observed that color-based embedded vision computers are now available which sell for appreciably less than traditional color-based general-purpose machine vision systems. This may account for some of this price erosion.
Within the North American market no distinction was made last year in terms of percent of sales for color applications. The same figure was used for the market as for the industry. The result was that in 1999, revenues generated from sales for color applications of general-purpose machine vision systems was estimated to be $14.6M based on the sale of 586 units. This year it was determined that color-based sales accounted for 6.6% of the North American market for vision processors and 3.4% of the units. This accounts for $18M and 883 units. Last year the average price in the North American market for a system sold for a color application was $24.9K and this year the comparable average price was $20.4K.
The difference in average price of a color system sold into the North American market versus a system sold by a North American vision processor company may be accounted for by the fact that overseas sales would most likely have been more of a component level sale while a sale into the North American market more of a solution sale.
Color-Based Frame Grabbers
The North American respondents who supply frame grabbers suggested that 7.6% of their revenues and 6.4% of their units were for the sale of systems operating on color cues. Last year the intelligent image processing board suppliers suggested that 7.1% of their revenues and 3.9% of their units came from the sale of systems involving color. In 1999 this represented $4.8M and 939 units while this year these sales represent $5.1M and 1743 systems (based on the sale of 4530 frame grabbers). Last year the average price associated with a frame grabber-based system sale was estimated to be $5.1K while this year it was $2.9K.

As with the vision processors. within the North American market no distinction was made last year in terms of percent of sales for color applications. The same figure was used for the market as for the industry. The result was that in 1999, revenues generated from sales for color applications of image processing board-based systems was $2.7M based on the sale of 526 systems. This year it was determined that color-based sales accounted for 11.4% of the North American market for frame grabbers and 9.7% of the units. This accounts for $4.7M and 1373 systems (based on 3850 frame grabbers). Last year the average price in the North American market for a system sold for a color application was $5.1K and this year the comparable average price was $3.4K.
Combined Color
Combining the vision processor and frame grabber-based system sales suggests the total North American market for systems based on color sold specifically by these companies was $22.7M and 2256 systems. This compares to $17.3M and 1409 units in 1999. This represents an increase of 31.2% in revenues and 60.1% in units in the North American market. The average price of these systems was $10.1K in 2000 versus $12.3K in 1999 reflecting a decrease of 17.9%.
The combined sales of North American vision processor and frame grabber industries into the worldwide market for color-based applications was $28.5M and 2952 units in 2000 versus $29.9M and 1818 units. This represents a decrease of 4.7% in revenues but an increase of 62.4% in units. The average price of these systems sold by North American companies was $9.7K in 2000 versus $16.4K in 1999 reflecting a decrease of 40.9%.
