Interconnect Solutions for Humanoid Robotics: High-Flex Cables, Cable Assemblies, and Mini Connectors
How Ruggedized Cables and Connectors Keep Humanoid Robots Moving, Communicating, and Performing
When most people think of humanoid robots, their minds drift to sci-fi movies or futuristic labs but the reality is much more exciting: humanoid robotics are no longer a concept of tomorrow – they are here today, walking, working and innovating alongside us. From industrial applications like working in factories to advanced research applications, humanoid robot usage is exciting and on the rise, and the technology enabling them is evolving rapidly.
At the core of every humanoid robot is a network of advanced interconnect solutions which power movement, deliver high-speed data, and withstand the demanding conditions of dynamic environments – that’s where the right cables and connectors make all the difference.
Interconnect Solutions Powering Humanoid Robotics
Bringing humanoid robots to life requires interconnects that are as dynamic as the robots themselves. The cables, wires, and connectors that go into robots aren’t just carrying power or data, they’re often essential to giving the robot lifelike movements and sensory capabilities, even within the most difficult conditions.
Robotics come with a unique set of challenges and the environment they are used in also comes with a laundry list of challenges. Cables and connectors are subject to repeated flex life cycles. In robot speak, flex life refers to the constant bending, twisting, and flexing required of cables and connectors in robotics. A robot’s range of motion includes every joint and limb used by the robot to function, so the flex life considerations for a cable assembly might mean thousands of flexing cycles each hour. Any standard cable will quickly fail under those conditions, leading to significant system downtime, unnecessary repairs, and loss of data.
Robots can also be in outdoor settings or other locations that aren’t climate-controlled. Robots have to stand up to rough environments, which means all the cables and connectors must be up to the task. These robots are often exposed to the elements, from dust and moisture to extreme temperatures. Oils, coolants, lubricants, and even accidental spills can get in the way, potentially degrading cable jacketing, breaking down connector seals, and causing other types of damage.
Space and weight are also essential factors in the robot design, with every ounce and cubic millimeter being accounted for in the final calculations. Engineering robotic devices that are smaller, more powerful, and with maximum efficiency on a limited power budget is the goal, and making it all happen can push the limits of what’s possible in micro and nano interconnect design and technology.
Robotics Interconnect Solutions: High-Flex Cables, Hybrid Cables, Cable Assemblies, Coil Cords and Connectors
To meet the ever-growing demands of humanoid robotics, a wide variety of interconnects are available and ready to power those solutions.
- High-Flex Cables: First, there are high-flex cables designed for robotics applications. These cables are engineered with specialized conductor materials and jacketing that can be bent, flexed, and torsioned millions of times without signal loss or mechanical failure. They are the lifeline of a robot’s limbs, moving and flexing as the robot itself moves and flexing. Winchester Interconnect has several high-flex cable designs in our portfolio and all are customized for specific dynamic applications.
- Hybrid Cables: Hybrid cables integrate multiple cable functions and types (e.g., power, signals, and even fiber optic cables) into a single solution. Hybrid cables can significantly cut cable clutter in robot designs while improving efficiency by reducing overall cable size and weight.
- Coil Cords: Also referred to as coiled cables or spiral cords, coil cords provide flexibility and stretch in applications where movement is key. They are also great for applications where the robot’s reach needs to be highly variable, allowing the cable to extend and retract as needed without becoming tangled or overly stressed.
- Miniaturized Connectors: In applications where physical size is a premium, like within the robot’s hand or integrated into the robot’s sensory components, micro and nano connectors offer the power, size, and performance needed to get the job done. These connectors, like our Micro and Nano connector products, deliver high-performance connections while taking up the smallest amount of space.
- M-Series Connectors and Assemblies: M-series connectors, such as the popular M8 and M12, are an industrial automation standard, but they are becoming an increasingly critical component in robotics. M-series connectors are known for their rugged, secure, and versatile connections for a wide variety of sensors, actuators, and controls. M8 connectors are typically used for smaller sensors and actuators while M12 connectors are used for a larger range of industrial applications. Winchester has a comprehensive selection of M-series cable assemblies, each rugged and reliable, and designed to meet all of the strict specifications and demands of robotics systems.
