Young Engineers Use Donated Plastic Machinery Components

POSTED 04/30/2010

The 19th annual FIRST Robotics Competition came to a close last week at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta. This year marked the sixth consecutive season igus® has joined forces with the not-for-profit organization as a gold-level supplier. The company donated Energy Chain® cable carriers, iglide® plastic bearings, igubal® spherical bearings and DryLin® linear bearings and guide systems to more than 1,650 participating teams.

Twenty thousand people, including students, mentors, volunteers and fans, gathered under the dome for “Breakaway”, a soccer-like game where robots had to climb obstacles and score goals against opponents. A three-team alliance, comprised of California’s “Beach Cities Robotics”, Michigan’s “HOT Team” and Connecticut’s “Bobcat Robotics”, earned first-place bragging rights. The Chairman’s Award—considered the highest honor given at the competition —was awarded to team “Miss Daisy” of Ambler, Pa.

igus’ Energy Chain cable carriers are ideal for preventing cables from becoming snagged on other competitors’ robots, while its plain, spherical and linear bearings can be used anywhere on the machines to facilitate motion. One FIRST team, for example, used iglide M250 clips bearings to improve the functionality of its robot’s ball-handling device and pneumatic lift system.
