Bot Index Highlights:
Despite a strong start to 2019, the Bot Index faltered relative to the S & P 500 in full year performance. The broad market gained almost 30% for the year, one of the best annual performances ever. The Bots, however, turned in a respectable 22.53% gain in 2019. Broken down by quarters, the initial quarter of 2019 saw the Bot Index turn in a sparkling 20.26% return versus the S & P 500’s 12.67%. In the second quarter and third quarters the broad index produced nominal returns while the Bot Index gave back 5% or so of its first quarter gains. The final quarter produced substantial returns from both indexes, 7.04% from the bots while the S & P 500 gained 7.98%.
During the year several of the companies that comprise the Bot Index generated exceptional results. Four companies rewarded their shareholders with better than fifty percent gains for the year. The best of which was Apple whose 87.96% return was exceptional. Apple’s surprising results were closely followed by NVIDIA Corp’s 76.06% gain, Teledyne who rose 70.90% and OMRON Corp. that increased 60.25%. Unfortunately, there were eight components that actually experienced negative returns, with six of the eight having experienced double-digit declines. The worst of which were reported by Ekso Bionics (-70.15%) and NIO Corp. (-37.83%).
