When we created the Bot Index in 2016, we did so with the concept that the world’s economies were perched on the cusp of a new perception of how artificial intelligence, robotics, drones and 3D Systems could be utilized to advance civilization. Much like our moniker, “There is no force on earth as powerful as an idea whose time has come.” the age of advanced automation has arrived. We are somewhat astounded that those companies that create or utilize technical automation, have seen their stock prices soar as noted in the Index as compared with the broader S & P 500. In investing, timing is virtually everything and, if Victor Hugo was alive today, he would certainly assert that this ‘idea’ of robotics is a force that may well be this era’s most powerful economic element.
That having been said, the Bot Index gained another 2.80% this week as compared with the S & P 500’s one hundred and twenty-four basis point increase. Earlier in our analysis of the Bot’s component increases, the typical leading gainers rose 3% or so. Recently, however, we have had to extract those companies whose gains were in double digits to review the stimulus behind their remarkable move.
For this week the double-digit gainers included NVIDIA Corp. (+10.08%), AeroVironment (+11.35%), iRobot (+12.13%) and Brooks Automation (+14.25%).
Among the weaker members of the composite were three larger cap issues, Apple (-1.09%, Amazon (-2.22%) and Tesla (-4.33%).

It is remarkable how the imaginative minds in Hollywood seem to anticipate many of the subsequent ‘advancements’ in the world of robots and automation. In a movie, The Passengers’, there was a robotic bartender that served up libations as well as serving as a sounding board for two of the passengers that awoke early from their multidecade state of cryogenic deep sleep. In reading today’s news, it seems that when MSC Cruises’ new flagship ship the MSC Virtuosa launches later this year it will feature a bartender much like Author in Passengers’. The cruise line recently revealed details of its “immersive, futuristic” bar and entertainment experience – including a “humanoid” bartender whom passengers will call Rob. Rob will be able to “convey emotion,” although it does not specify which emotions Rob has been programmed to express and do so in eight languages!
