v>Dayton, Ohio — Motoman’s slim, powerful 7-axis VS50 “Versatile Spot” welding robot is uniquely designed to optimize automotive applications using DC spot guns with compact servo actuators. Fast and agile, the VS50 robot can be placed in close proximity to workpieces and other robots to create flexible, high-density layouts, eliminating multiple stations and resulting in shorter production lines and smaller spot welding workcells that provide reduced cycle and takt times.

The compact VS50 robot is only 493 mm (19.4”) wide (including the spot harness), with 2,853 mm (112.3”) reach and ±0.1 mm (0.004”) repeatability. Seven degrees of freedom provide the ability to reorient the manipulator axes without changing gun position in space, and the VS50’s multi-jointed arm can fold down into a very low profile. Its innovative design with integrated spot harness prevents interference and reduced programming time. Integrated cabling and hoses also last more than six times longer than traditional harnesses, reducing maintenance and improving uptime.

The base axes of the VS50 robot move 30% faster than heavy-payload robots, resulting in shorter takt times and higher throughput. Due to the lighter gun, the VS50 robot uses less power, even at its faster speeds. When combined with improved efficiency of smaller DC guns, the VS50 robot offers 50% power savings compared to traditional larger robots and guns.

The VS50 robot uses Motoman’s dynamic, next-generation DX100 controller that includes patented multiple robot control technology to easily handle multiple tasks and control up to eight robots (72 axes), I/O devices, and communication protocols. Featuring a robust PC architecture with unmatched memory capacity, the DX100 uses a Windows® CE programming pendant with color touch screen. The energy-saving DX100 controller features faster processing speeds for smoother interpolation, advanced robot arm motion, built-in collision avoidance, quicker I/O response, and accelerated Ethernet communication. Advanced control functions optimize robot acceleration/deceleration characteristics, reducing cycle time. Its extensive I/O suite includes integral PLC and HMI pendant displays, 2,048 I/O and a graphical ladder editor that can provide system level control. The DX100 controller supports all major fieldbus networks. It is compliant to ANSI/RIA 15.06-1999 and other relevant ISO and CSA safety standards.
