Complete solution set delivers scalable, high- performance automation and motion to simplify machine designs and significantly reduce the time and costs associated with commissioning complex systems
Kollmorgen introduces the AKD® PDMM. AKD PDMM combines a high-performance multi-axis motion controller, complete IEC61131-3 soft PLC, EtherCAT® master, and AKD® servo drive in a single, compact package. This enables OEMs to lower machine costs, reduce panel space by 50% or more and simplify wiring and integration, while increasing system flexibility, scalability, and motion performance. AKD PDMM performance and functionality is ideally suited for applications in flexographic printing, packaging, converting and medical, as well as other automation markets where precise synchronization of multiple axes of motion is vital.
“By packaging a full-featured PLC directly into the servo drive, AKD PDMM delivers a level of integration that is simply unavailable with other automation platforms. It combines Kollmorgen’s industry-leading AKD® servo drives with the high-performance motion control of Kollmorgen Automation Suite™ (KAS) into a very small package, providing OEMs with a complete and fully scalable platform from one axis to 12 or more axes with AKD PDMM and up to 128 axes using KAS PAC based solutions,” says Joshua Jensen, Kollmorgen’s Global Product Line Manager - Controls. “When used with Kollmorgen’s intuitive and powerful Pipe Network™ motion engine, OEMs can significantly simplify machine designs and commission complex systems in hours and days, instead of weeks or more.”
AKD PDMM is fully programmable through the KAS Integrated Development Environment (KAS IDE) – the result is a seamless automation solution that is scalable from a single axis up to 128 axes with a single controller. KAS also offers two powerful motion engines: Kollmorgen’s PipeNetwork and industry-standard PLCopen. PipeNetwork is a graphical programming environment that enables developers to lay out an entire machine architecture using intuitive function blocks, from which the run-time code is automatically generated. Without writing a single line of code, designers can use the virtual blocks to program the motion and define relationships between axes. Visual programming also reduces errors and makes software more portable.

Additional AKD PDMM benefits include the ability to master seven or more additional axes over an EtherCAT network plus additional EtherCAT connected devices such as I/O and MODBUS connected devices such as HMIs, enabling machine builders to leverage high-performance and scalable automation and motion to meet exact system needs. Additionally, AKD PDMM is fully compatible with Kollmorgen’s AKT™ I/O modules and AKI™ HMI panels, so OEMs can build optimized systems with a single source supplier, while leveraging the same system architecture as any other Kollmorgen Automation Suite system.
Kollmorgen Automation Suite is a complete high-performance machine automation solution comprised of highly intuitive software, best-in-class and unparalleled-in-breadth motion components, and comprehensive engineering services with experienced Kollmorgen engineers. As a result, Kollmorgen Automation Suite enables OEMs to quickly move from concept to a completed machine in less time, with fewer in-house engineering resources, than ever before. By simulating the machine’s operation in advance of connecting all components, Kollmorgen Automation Suite offers a truly differentiated solution that simplifies and shortens the machine design cycle, while improving machine performance. In actual applications Kollmorgen Automation Suite has been shown to increase throughput up to 25 percent and reduce scrap up to 50 percent, with increased precision and significantly less downtime.
