The Basics of Motion Control

Motion control refers to the handling of products through the use of electrical and mechanical components. Motion control can be applied to virtually any application, including manufacturing, packing, shipping and more. Motion control can also be used in any industry, such as automation, robotics, manufacturing, packaging, shipping, transportation, automotive, electronics, medical, food and many more. It’s not just limited to industrial companies; the opportunities are endless and the technologies are flexible enough to accommodate the needs of many industries. Many different components fall under the umbrella of motion control systems. You can group motion control components and devices in many ways to help you execute your precision applications:

  • 3 or 4 axis motion controller
  • Motion control board or boards or chip
  • PCI motion control card or cards
  • Drives
  • Hydraulic components
  • Sensor or sensors
  • Stepper motor
  • Linear motor
  • Rotary motors
  • Servo motors
  • PID controller
  • PLC
  • Software
  • and more

Because you may find a single, off-the-shelf unit for your application, only minor engineering or programming may be necessary. As with any tried and true technology, there are also many manufacturers and suppliers who can assist you in finding the quality equipment or product you need, or develop completely customized solutions. Many of these suppliers, distributors and integrators are members of Motion Control Association.
