Innovative piece picking solution for the automotive industry
Problem:
The customer Volkswagen Slovakia, a.s. decided to automate one of its car body production processes, which was performed manually before. The process started with production parts being loosely stored in a container on the floor. A worker took the parts from the container and inserted them into a jig. After that, an industrial robot took them from the jig to be further technologically processed.
The goal of the new automation solution was to deploy an industrial robot for taking the parts directly from the container and inserting them into the jig. The solution was designed to ensure stability and repeatability of the process.
Solution:

The customer was looking for a solution from a local supplier of robotic vision solutions specializing in bin picking applications.
Based on a 3D (CAD) model of the part, the solution identifies each part in the container, including its position and orientation. Then the robot picks the part with a gripper, adjusts its orientation, and inserts it into the jig.
