Summary:
Corning is seeking a highly motivated engineer to design, develop, and deploy cutting-edge measurement systems that integrate optical metrology and machine vision techniques for manufacturing and development environments. This role requires expertise in optical systems, image processing, machine learning, and system integration. The ideal candidate is passionate about solving complex measurement challenges and transitioning innovative technologies from concept to robust manufacturing solutions.
Scope of Position:
You will be responsible for developing and implementing advanced measurement systems that utilize optical metrology and machine vision technologies to support product inspection, quality control, and manufacturing operations. You will interface with cross-functional teams to ensure the successful deployment and maintenance of these systems.
Major Duties & Responsibilities
Day-to-Day Responsibilities:
- Design, build, and test measurement systems incorporating optical metrology and machine vision techniques.
- Develop and implement image processing algorithms for feature extraction, classification, and metrology.
- Train and deploy machine learning models to enhance measurement system performance.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams (Development, Quality, IT, Operations) to define requirements and integrate systems into manufacturing workflows.
- Transfer technology from early-stage development to production-ready solutions.
- Create and update documentation, including system specifications, operating procedures, and software manuals.
- Train engineering, maintenance, and operations teams on the use and maintenance of deployed systems.
- Troubleshoot and optimize measurement systems, both remotely and onsite, using data analysis and performance metrics.
Travel Requirements:
- Up to 10-30% domestic and international travel may be required, with trips ranging from one day to several weeks.
Work Schedule:
- 40 hours per week, flexible schedule as needed.
Minimum Skills & Abilities
Required Experience/Skills:
- Hands-on experience with optical systems, imaging hardware, and measurement instruments.
- Strong programming skills in Python and/or C# for data manipulation and system integration.
- Knowledge of machine vision algorithms (blob analysis, edge detection, morphology, feature extraction, classification, etc.).
- Experience with machine learning techniques, including training CNNs and utilizing traditional methods.
- Data retrieval, plotting, and analysis using tools like Excel, MATLAB, or Python.
- Familiarity with software development tools such as Halcon, OpenCV, or LabVIEW.
- Strong communication and presentation skills (MS Office programs).
Desired Experience/Skills:
- Expertise in optical metrology techniques, including 3D measurement, lasers, and physical optics.
- Experience with motion control systems and imaging platforms.
- Knowledge of statistical analysis and process improvement methodologies (e.g., design of experiments).
- Familiarity with database management and high-performance computing systems.
- Experience supporting manufacturing operations with metrology and inspection systems.

Minimum Education & Experience
Required Education:
- Prefer BS, MS, or PhD in Optical Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related fields.
