Automated Environmental Compliance Data Collection
POSTED 04/25/2025
THE CHALLENGE
The facility was required to submit compliance data to the EPA every six months under the Continuous Parametric Monitoring System (CPMS) requirements. This involved manually collecting, compiling, and formatting data from four separate PLCs — a time-consuming process that not only strained the engineering and compliance teams, but often led to error-prone submissions.
The need for a more efficient and reliable method of data collection and reporting became evident as the facility sought to improve compliance accuracy while reducing the operational strain on its staff.
SMART AUTOMATION SOLUTION
The ASA team developed a centralized data collection and reporting solution. Key components included:
- Automated data polling from each PLC
- Secure storage of compliance-relevant parameters in a structured SQL database
- A built-in export feature to generate EPS-ready reports on a pre-defined schedule
- Scalable architecture to accommodate future monitoring points or reporting requirements
- This system ensured that data was captured continuously, reliably, and in the proper format for regulatory review.
IMPACT
- Eliminated manual data gathering and spreadsheet compilation
- Reduced risk of non-compliance due to missing or incomplete data
- Freed up engineering resources previously allocated to reporting tasks
- Delivered a repeatable, automated process alignedwith EPA expectations
- Improved audit readiness and overall data reliability
