Top 3 Recommendations for Bringing Automation Software into Your Facility

POSTED 02/04/2022

Throughout this series, we uncovered the challenges automation solves, the benefits of automating, and how software makes automation more accessible and successful. In the last installment of this series, we asked Kel Guerin and Rob House for their advice and recommendations for companies considering robot automation software.

Recommendation #1 Research and Planning

There are many different options available in the automation industry. The goal is to find the best solution to fit your programming needs. If you want the implementation to be successful, it is critical to do your research upfront and invest in the technology that is going to allow you to make the most of your automation.

As we know robots, are not inherently smart, they need to be told what to do. It is critical for manufacturers to complete proper research and planning. If they do not, we've seen this directly relate to robots being underutilized and, in turn giving, them an unpleasant experience. At the end of the day, we strongly advise you to research the automation/software options out there and select the software that best fits your programming needs. Also, confirm your team has implemented the right planning to ensure the ultimate success.

Recommendation #2 Strong Brands

Once you have completed your research and planning into the best options for your facilities. The next recommendation is to select a company that has successfully implemented customers similar to your use case. The goal is to set up the right technology that is going to enable your facility to succeed. Doing it right the first time will help prevent major headaches and frustrations down the line. When working with robotics, the last thing you want to do is invest a significant amount of money into a system that is not going to get used or work how you were anticipating. We strongly advise that you do not cut corners when deciding on a technology partner. We have seen this directly affect how efficient your facility is and the ROI you will see on the investment.

Recommendation #3 Don’t Be Afraid

The best advice we can provide is do not let technology intimidate you. The automation and robotics industry looks vastly different today than it did 10-years ago. We are seeing huge technological advancements that are not only going to make technology easier to use but also more accessible. When you first look at bringing automation into your facilities, look at all of your processes. Then select a process that is fairly simple, but if automated, will make a huge impact. The power of automation will allow your employees to be utilized elsewhere in an impactful way.

With brand-agnostic software like OCTOPUZ and READY Forge/OS employees, have the ability to switch to a different robot, a different process, or a new project without having to be retrained. We've seen manufacturers empowering their employees to transform from previously working on the machines to spending their days programming a fleet of robots. It has introduced a whole new class of workers within that organization just by the power of automation.

The industry is shifting to automation. We are not only seeing this help with the skilled labour gap within our industry, but employers are also seeing the benefits of upskilling their workforce. The employees that were previously feeding the parts into a machine are now programming and managing multiple automated work cells. These employees ultimately become the biggest automation champions as they are being used to their fullest potential. We thank you for following along on this four-part journey where we unpacked the benefits of automation and how you can utilize it within your facilities.
