OCTOPUZ Small Changes, Big Impact

Since our most recent release in January, our team has been hard at work developing a tremendous amount of valuable new improvements to OCTOPUZ.

We have a number of exciting things still to come later this year. And today, we've launched a new release of OCTOPUZ that focuses on many different areas of our software, with one goal in mind: let's make our OLRP experience even better.

Enhanced usability with Floor-Wall
When using our Floor-Wall selection method to create a path, you can now visualize exactly how we are detecting and constructing your path. We've also added tools to adjust your click locations after they've been made. You now won't need to trial and error if you don't get the path you were expecting the first time.

In addition, we've designed an improved way to account for minor gaps on your part, so your path can continue more easily.

Dynamic orientation when translating statements
For situations where you need to both translate your path to a new location on your part AND change its orientation, we can now do this automatically for you. Using your selection locations, we'll automatically apply a rotation, with an additional setting to fine tune that rotation angle as you see fit.

Small changes, big impact
We've made a bunch of small improvements under the hood to improve the performance of OCTOPUZ, particularly when working with very large paths (I'm talking thousands and thousands of points). Most notably, it'll take significantly less time to use Modify and Transform.

We've also made some other changes we'd like you to know about:

  • Import weld statements from backups for Yaskawa: weld statements posted from OCTOPUZ for a Yaskawa robot can be imported back into OCTOPUZ via Import from Robot Backups. These motions will come back in as weld statements with tool on/off commands and other welding settings.
  • Welding terminology: in some locations in our UI, we now use terms more familiar to welders, when using the welding process type.
  • Start and End Offset by Percentage: in Path Settings, “Start Offset” and “End Offset” can now be set using a percentage value, where the path will be offset by that value as a percentage of the entire path. For example, if your path is 100 mm, and you have Start Offset set to 10%, then the path will be 90 mm in length and begin 10 mm in.
  • Transform Snap Selection setting: in Transform, there is now a setting called “Snap Selection”.  If checked, it will snap your pick to a nearby edge or corner. If unchecked, it will not snap your pick.
  • Transform up to 50 copies: we've increased the maximum number of copies which can be created at a single time, from 25 up to 50.
  • Preview tool for search using laser point and laser camera search: when using Manual Search or Auto Search with a laser point search selected, a preview tool with a laser tool and line is shown. When using Auto Search with Laser Camera enabled, a preview tool with a laser camera tool and laser blast is shown.
  • Additional parameters for Nozzle Searching: when creating a Manual Search, additional parameters for a nozzle search can handle cases where the nozzle is not parallel with the surface with which it is making contact.
  • Auto Search knows about Start and End: when creating an Auto Search, the Distance parameter (a mm value which sets the minimum amount of distance between two path points to add a search location) now knows about and considers the location of the start and end search.
  • Add Point Distance setting: when adding a new point to a path via Point Editor, there is a new setting to add a distance in mm. This value will add the new point away from the selected point, with that distance equal to the set mm value while respecting the direction of the path.
  • Linearize individual points: in the Point Editor, individual points can be selected and linearized.
  • Automatic update if motion-impacting variables are changed: if either “Tool Travel Direction” or “Tool Tip Orientation” is changed on a robot that already contains motion statements, an option is available to automatically update these existing motion statements to reflect the new variable value.
  • Support for Mastercam 2022: the OCTOPUZ Mastercam interface now supports Mastercam 2022.

This OCTOPUZ update is now available to download for all customers with an active OCTOPUZ software plan.
