USB 3.0 camera available with low-cost rolling shutter sensors from Sony

POSTED 01/17/2018

With Starvis, Sony has introduced a new range of CMOS sensors. These rolling shutter sensors offer increased light sensitivity, as they are back-illuminated. This means that the light is absorbed directly by the photodiodes instead of first having to pass through several different layers of electronics. The high degree of light sensitivity coupled with an excellent dynamic range provide a new level of quality for applications involving challenging lighting conditions.

The 1/1.8” 6.4 megapixel (3096 x 2080) camera has been integrated into the mvBlueFOX3 USB3 Vision camera range as the mvBlueFOX3-2064 and is capable of achieving a frame rate of 50.1 fps at full resolution. An additional benefit is the possibility of triggering, which was not included by Sony, but has been achieved using this sensor by the MATRIX VISION developers. Not only that, but the MATRIX VISION developers have also implemented “mvRollingShutterFlash”, a special mode that makes it much easier to use the flash for applications.

About the camera family mvBlueFOX3-2:

The mvBlueFOX3-2 USB 3.0 range is the range created especially for the IMX sensors from Sony. In spite of its compact size, the range demonstrates a great deal of strength when it comes to performance: alongside its large 256 MB integrated image memory, the mvBlueFOX3 is equipped with a generous FPGA, which includes a number of smart features for image processing, along with 2/4 digital inputs and outputs. The camera is compatible with the GenICam™ and USB3 Vision® standards. Drivers are available for Windows. Furthermore, the camera supports all USB3 Vision®-compatible third-party image processing libraries.
