Robotic Birds of Prey Make their Mark on the Food Packaging Industry

Using the imagery of birds of prey snatching fish from rivers with great speed and agility, JLS has developed the “Talon” series of systems for primary and secondary food packaging. The JLS product line includes the Osprey, Peregrine, and Heron systems, all of which are designed to meet specific packaging functionality or package formats. The ABB IRB 360 FlexPicker robot is the technology platform for all of these JLS systems.
Since JLS has been deploying vision guided, robotic based packaging systems into the food industry in North America starting in 2002, their experience has prompted a bit of boasting. According to Craig Souser, President of JLS, “We hear a lot about how robots don’t work in the food industry. Most often, the failures are due to the lack of experience by the integrator, not the technology. At JLS, we’ve invested 12+ years in the development and refinement of our Talon and Osprey systems. We’re proud of our ‘real world’ experience and believe it brings real value to our customers.”
