KBN-PCE-CXP4 CoaXPress Frame Grabber

POSTED 06/11/2012

rong>CoaXPress Frame Grabber Reduces Deployment and Operational Costs of Multi-Camera Machine Vision Systems

WOBURN, MA -- Machine vision engineers are constantly striving to establish systems that are more competitive and agile, that reduce the cost of physical infrastructure, and that support the demands of faster processing. BitFlow will begin shipping today the Karbon KBN-PCE-CXP4, an innovative four-channel video KBN-PCE-CXP4 CoaXPress Frame Grabberframe grabber that addresses these challenges and helps leverage the simple, yet powerful CoaXPress (CXP) digital interface standard.

CXP transmits high-speed serial data from a camera to a frame grabber at speeds of up to 6 Gigabits/second, while also sending control commands,13W Safe Power, and camera triggers over a single piece of 75 Ohm coaxial cable, resulting in considerable cost savings and the capability to route the coax cable up to 135 meters without compromising image quality or speed.

Coming on the heels of the October release of the BitFlow CXP2 two-channel frame grabber, the new Karbon KBN-PCE-CXP4 incorporates four independent channels to allow engineers to easily sync four single link CXP cameras onto the same board for simultaneous image capture, or to connect a single quad link CXP camera, two dual-link CXP cameras, or a combination of one dual and two single link CXP cameras. To acquire image sequences well beyond the 4GB barrier, the board features a PCI Express x8 host interface with a maximum transfer rate of 3.125 Gb/S per link combined with exclusive BitFlow FlowThru™ technology that eliminates the need for on-board memory. The cameras are linked via individual BNC connections, so the Windows® operating system sees a separate frame grabber for each. Cameras can be accurately synchronized, or operated completely unsynchronized.

"Since the introduction of the CXP2, BitFlow now has CoaXPress products on all continents with customers reporting operational and cost improvements based on re-purposing existing coaxial cable infrastructure, reduction in deployment times, and improvements in application performances," said Donal Waide, Director of Sales for BitFlow. "The CXP frame grabbers are built upon our original Karbon platform that has been deployed for many years with a Camera Link front-end.  All the acquisition and DMA engines in our new CXP frame grabbers have been field-proven by previous Karbon generations under the harshest industrial conditions."

Adding either the Karbon-CXP2 or CXP4 to an application is simplified with the BitFlow SDK, which supports both 32-bit and 64-bit operating systems. Both the CXP and Camera Link versions of Karbon frame grabbers are software compatible with each other, as well as with other current BitFlow frame grabbers, to make the migration from Camera Link or analog to CXP seamless and hassle-free.
