Amazon Robotifies for $775 Million to Kiva
POSTED 03/21/2012
Who would have predicted that one day Amazon would invest $775 million to have its own fleet of flitting, busy warehouse robots? If George Jetson had a clue he wasn’t telling, but as reported widely, including video from CNBC, Kiva Systems is joining Amazon as an asset.
“Amazon has long used automation in its fulfillment centers, and Kiva’s technology is another way to improve productivity by bringing the products directly to employees to pick, pack and stow,” said Dave Clark, vice president, global customer fulfillment, Amazon.com. “Kiva shares our passion for invention, and we look forward to supporting their continued growth.”
If a doppelganger for this situation exists, it might be in cartoon land at Spacely’s Space Sprockets, or maybe in the latest Staples ad. I.E., It’s so easy, Staples even uses it. (If you watch the initial footage from CNBC it shows Kiva in action at a Staples warehouse as Kiva CEO Mick Mountz comments.)
“For the past ten years, the Kiva team has been focused on creating innovative material handling technologies,” said Mick Mountz, CEO and founder of Kiva Systems. “I’m delighted that Amazon is supporting our growth so that we can provide even more valuable solutions in the coming years.”
Kiva Systems makes fleets of robots for inventory storage and retrieval and will be seen at ProMat booth 3203 (Automate and ProMat are collocated again, January 21-24, 2013). Amazon has a lot of logistics to manage in order that a huge inventory ships right and ships fast. Now they have robot “tugs” to create hyper efficiencies.
“People will wonder what it means to have robots at the warehouse hub in their metro area,” said Brian Huse, Director, Marketing & Public Relations, Robotic Industries Association. “Work might change as robots disrupt old assumptions, but it will create new opportunities in logistics, operation and maintenance.”
In short, the supply chain may get robotified, but new jobs will emerge that place a premium on technological skill sets.
Maybe George Jetson was a logistics genius? Even if he wasn’t, he had a great car. If you have an itch to see the future of robotics, visit Rho Bota Phi or try the Career Center at Robotics Online.
Following the acquisition, Kiva Systems’ headquarters will remain in North Reading, Massachusetts.
Under the terms of the agreement, which has been approved by Kiva’s stockholders, Amazon will acquire all of the outstanding shares of Kiva for approximately $775 million in cash, as adjusted for the assumption of options and other items. Subject to various closing conditions, the acquisition is expected to close in the second quarter of 2012.
