Adimec Announces MEDEA+ Project TritonZ Proud Winner of the 2011 Innovation Award

POSTED 11/23/2011

Though TritonZ was a relatively small CATRENE project with 6 partners, Trident, Grass Valley , Adimec, EqcoLogic and CMOSIS, the project was a very successful one. Through close cooperation between the partners and efficient use of synergies between technologies, the project resulted in the worldwide CoaXPress standard, an adjoining chip-set, 3D rendering and conversion algorithms for 3D displays, a 12 Megapixel high data rate CMOS image sensor, a new video processing chain for professional cameras, and it proved that it is possible to capture 3D by means of Time of Flight with a regular HDTV CMOS sensor.

All candidates were requested to submit an application file of four A4 pages describing why their project was the most advanced for innovation and R&D (in line with the main award criteria - reasons / successes / other assets). This year 61 projects were submitted.

The jury unanimously chose the TritonZ, which they mentioned was exceptional for the following reasons:
• A relatively small project with a huge impact.
• Realization of a world standard, CoaXPress.
• The results of this project generate substantial money for the EU.

For Adimec, one of the members of the TritonZ consortium, the newly developed image processing algorithms for CMOS imagers opened the market for very fast machine vision cameras (operating at speeds up to 2 Gpixels/second).

Based on the research and development done in TritonZ, Adimec has launched a new camera family using CMOSIS image sensors of 2 and 4 Megapixels and the CoaXPress interface. The CoaXPress consortium (founded by TritonZ partners Adimec and EqcoLogic) developed the CoaXPress vision interface which became a world standard in March 2011 and won the Vision Award 2009 in November 2009. This resulted in contacts with many interested customers and business partners and a market pull for CoaXPress technology. CoaXPress is expected to become the leading interface for machine vision cameras in high end applications.

Specific Impacts on the European Economy
All of the TritonZ partners are important players in their respective worldwide markets. Nearly all results (some IC processing excluded) are manufactured within Europe and shipped worldwide. The products manufactured within Europe as a result of this project are cameras (for professional broadcast, machine vision, military, and medical markets), CoaXPress transmission ICs, 12 Megapixel CMOS sensors for machine vision and industrial applications, and 3D rendering and conversion algorithms running on European programmable ICs.

The project has generated in total 10 patents in two years: 5 patents on CMOS image sensors, 3 patents on high speed communication and 2 patents on 3D algorithms. The fruitful co-operation has also resulted in the creation of the Image Capture Network for companies in the Netherlands and Belgium working on real-time imaging. This network was initiated by Grass Valley and Adimec and has already resulted in the CA308 ICAF project in co-operation with 3 Universities.
