LEARN MORE

SMAC makes Moving Coil electric actuators. These products are the fastest actuators in the world. Cycle life is well beyond 100M. They have the ability to softly land on surfaces and then apply a programmed specific force. SMAC’s new LDL series of linear actuators has a list price of around $300 making them the first real electric actuator alternative to air cylinders. This price is based on SMAC’s contstent cost down program featuring pointed coils, in-house manufactured encoders, and laser cut parts. SMAC invented the Linear Rotary actuator 25 years ago. These are widely used in Electronic Pick and Place, Quality Thread Check, Bottle Capping, and beginning to find wide use in Automatic Screw Driving and SMART Drilling and Tapping. Interestingly a number of companies are making an effort to copy SMAC - but are not able to match technology or price. SMAC also has stepped up its efforts in inspection by launching the MLA series - a direct challenge to old tech LVDT devices.

SMAC introduces new programmable electric actuator for filling

  • LPL80 actuators designed for precision force control needed for filling applications
  • LPL80 actuators provide programmable speed and positioning
  • LPL80s have a long life of more than 100 million cycles

Carlsbad, CA, July 31, 2023 –SMAC Moving Coil Actuators today introduced its new LPL80 electric linear moving coil actuators designed specifically for use on filling machines. SMAC’s LPL80 moving coil actuators come in an 80 mm size, standard dimensions for liquid filling machines.

Filling applications have specific force requirements. SMAC LPL Series actuators, designed to replace air cylinders, use a DC linear servo motor and are fully programmable for precision force control.

“Precise programmable control of speed and position are important,” said SMAC Founder and CEO Ed Neff. “This control is not possible using air cylinders.”

The LPL Series actuators have a peak force of 170 newton and a standard 25 mm stroke, with other strokes available.

Air cylinders, often used for filling, typically have two positions and one set speed, while some variations have three positions and two speeds. The LPL80 has programmable speed and positioning down to microns.

“This is quite useful in many filling situations, such as when an initial slow fill is needed to prevent foaming, which can be combined with a fast middle speed for quick filling and then a programmed to slow down in cases where the container top necks down,” Neff said.

The LPL80 also features SMAC’s patented “soft-land” capability to gently locate a surface, perform its function and provide real-time feedback for tracking, performance and quality control.

In addition, the electronic actuators have a peak cycle rate of 2,400 cycles per minute, up to three times faster than air cylinders and, because their programmable control eliminates harsh stops and starts that cause premature wear and failure, they last much longer than 100 million cycles.

The LPL80 is waterproof with an Ingress Protection (IP) 67 rating. IP69 versions can also be provided.

At about the same cost as the air cylinders they replace, SMAC keeps costs down without compromising durability or performance. The LPL Series actuators are manufactured with square steel tubing with high-strength neodymium magnets on all four sides for higher force than conventional linear motor designs. SMAC also uses precision shafts, bushings and anti-rotation dowel pins, rather than more expensive recirculating ball linear guides, which reduces moving mass and increases acceleration.

SMAC manufactures the LPL80 actuators in its Carlsbad, Calif. facility, allowing it to deliver most orders within three weeks.
