Description

Reporting to the VP of Sales & Marketing, the Sales Engineer promotes manufacturing equipment, software, consulting services, and supplies requiring professional engineering knowledge. The Sales Engineer plays a key role in making technical and economic judgments to persuade potential buyers. Responsibilities include designing and planning innovative manufacturing systems, such as robotics, automated welding, material handling, and assembly solutions. The ultimate goal is to contribute to the organization's growth, individual development, and profitability.

Major Duties & Responsibilities

  • Develop new customers and expand the existing customer base.
  • Collaborate with customers to define solutions for their proposed projects.
  • Work with internal teams or independently to create estimates and quote documents for customers.
  • Research and apply the latest trends and technologies in engineering projects.
  • Serve as the primary interface with customers throughout the project lifecycle, working closely with project managers to review progress and changes in contracts.
  • Assist with marketing efforts to drive future sales.
  • Operate with substantial independence in making decisions.
  • Expected to achieve annual sales of $5-$10M.
  • Spend 50% of the time traveling to meet customer needs and 50% managing customer relationships and pursuing creative solutions.
  • Recommend design or equipment changes where necessary.
  • Assist project managers in identifying resource requirements and tracking project deadlines.
  • Collaborate with project and lead engineers to ensure the project meets technical and functional specifications, is delivered on time, within budget, and meets profit targets.
  • Provide necessary information to the project team for planning and execution.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the President or VP of Sales.
  • Ensure compliance with all quality and safety regulations.

Minimum Skills & Abilities

  • Ability to read and interpret technical documents, business journals, and government regulations.
  • Capable of writing reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
  • Effective communicator in both individual and group settings with customers, vendors, and colleagues.
  • Proficient in concepts such as probability, statistics, geometry, and trigonometry.
  • Ability to apply fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations
  • Skilled in problem definition, data collection, fact establishment, and drawing valid conclusions.
  • Ability to handle complex technical instructions and manage both abstract and concrete variables.
  • Ability to present a positive and competent impression of both yourself and the company to customers and vendors.
  • Strong interpersonal communication, both written and verbal, with colleagues, managers, and shop personnel.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and Windows-based personal computers.
  • Familiarity with engineering software like SolidWorks, AutoCAD, and CRM systems.

Minimum Education & Experience

  • Minimum Associate's degree (AA) or seven years of related experience/training; Mechanical Engineering degree preferred.
  • 7+ years of experience in technical sales, with a preference for industrial automation experience.
  • Experience with project, engineering, or service management.
  • Proficiency in CRM systems, with MS Dynamics preferred.
  • Exposure to engineering software, including SolidWorks and AutoCAD.
