The Product Development Engineer will lead and support the development of processes and features for next generation banknote technologies. Our company allows you to develop products that will become an important part of United States history and land in the hands of people all over the world. Don't live in the area? Some of the Responsibilities of the R&D Product Development Engineer includes:  

  • Invent, prototype, and integrate new features using expertise in fiber engineering, paper machine processes, paper chemistries, and substrate feature engineering
  • Develop lab scale methods to show which materials and process factors are most important 
  • Leveraging deep knowledge of operations, critical process parameters, and lab-to-production scale-up experience
  • Analyze and refine experimental approaches, and provide data correlations, information, and direction to influence strategic initiatives 
  • Work with Operations to translate new product and process knowledge 
  • Assist in identifying and evaluating new technologies in areas of currency paper, and integrating security features
  • Apply appropriate product and process risk evaluations within a stage-gate framework
  • Motivate others to maximize their potential by clearly explaining project goals and benefits
  • Lead root cause investigations, capability development or product development projects
  • Identify continuous improvement opportunities for R&D and Manufacturing processes
  • Assist in developing early career co-workers through mentorship and coaching

Requirements:

  • Direct experience working with paper, pulp or related materials.
  • Degree in physical science or engineering (e.g., Paper Science & Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, or Chemical Engineering) with progressive industrial experience in R&D, product development, process engineering or manufacturing with an emphasis in process/product development to meet or exceed at least one of the following requirements:
    • Bachelor’s Degree and a min. of 10 yrs. paper/pulp industry experience
    • Master’s degree with a min. 7 yrs. paper/pulp industry experience
    • Doctorate degree with a min. of 5 yrs. paper/pulp industry experience

Desired Technical Experience, Skills and Characteristics:

  • Process and product development within a continuous improvement manufacturing environment
  • Dedication to a fact-based decision-making mindset, guided by logic and rigorous data analysis
  • Experience with physical and analytical property testing, Six Sigma, and Lean principles
  • Experience having led multifunctional teams using disciplined stage-gate processes is a definite plus
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively manage research projects as well as guide and influence multifunctional teams through thoughtful facilitation and creative idea exchange in a fast-paced, results-oriented environment
  • A talent for presenting technical information in a succinct and understandable manner, allowing team members across all functions to use information to their best ability
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully interact with personnel at all levels within an organization
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, tact and diplomacy for working with suppliers and customers
  • Ability to transition lab scale concepts to manufacturing to yield products that are successful in the field
  • Willingness to provide honest feedback and input across all management levels
  • Analytical, data-driven decision maker with a strong drive to understand the manufacturing environment, process and material constraints, customer requirements
  • Proven track record of providing data-centric technical recommendations that drive business growth through reliable processes that produce products reproducibly with minimized variation
  • Proficient verbal & written communication skills with the ability to inform cross-functional teams
  • Creative, self-starter regularly applying your development experience, critical thinking, analytical skills, statistical and project management tools to efficiently conceptualize, develop, and scale-up robust technologies
  • Ability to coordinate development, scale-up, and validation of new products and product modifications within highly-motivated multifunctional teams
  • Provide strong customer service and technical support to both internally and externally
  • Ability to lead or contribute to processes like FMEA to mitigate product and process risk
  • Ability to design experiments and run trials to be efficient in the development of process and products
  • Incumbent must be a United States citizen, demonstrating suitability for employment in a position of Public Trust consistent with our US Government contract requirements
