ATW is seeking a highly motivated Manufacturing Automation Engineer to develop and engineer new processes and high-volume automation equipment with the Automation Team in Addison, TX. These production lines include highly automated manufacturing systems to assemble trailers. In this role you will plan and design automation solutions for manufacturing processes.  Requires experience in the Lean production principles and tools; capable of analyzing the layout of equipment, workflow, assembly methods and work force to maximize efficiency; and improving production design for manufacturability. You will work closely with ATW internal Product Design, Operations, Facilities, Production and Quality Engineering teams and coordinates cross-functional design activities with equipment suppliers to develop new manufacturing equipment. You will assume full ownership of the design and technical transfer of the line’s tools to ATW Operations, qualifying them for use with the highest standards of safety, quality, and output.

Major Duties & Responsibilities

  • Develop new highly automated manufacturing lines from concept to production
  • Manage and coordinate project installation, qualification and ramp-up of manufacturing equipment
  • Optimize product flow and line efficiency while reducing Capex and lead-time
  • Collaborate with Production Engineering, EH&S, Quality, Operations and Design
  • Generate machine specifications, documentation, and manufacturing instructions
  • Develop system simulations model to determine layout, workflow, system capability and cycle times
  • Develop project business case in influence leadership to fund projects
  • Seek opportunities to implement new technology within ATW operations
  • Develop new processes, assess and document new and existing processes. Implement and evaluate changes to existing processes designed to improve product quality, productivity, and overall equipment efficiency.
  • Develop system related manufacturing Standards and Specifications
  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship to all other technicians, operators, and plant personnel.
  • Develop and implement improvements to existing automation in mechanical assembly, machining and inspection processes
  • Develop and implement maintenance programs for equipment
  • Work closely with internal and external customers and vendors to resolve issues and provide technical support
  • Develop systems and layouts that follow lean manufacturing philosophies of one-piece flow and Kanban, with emphasis on mistake proofing.
  • Lead and direct meetings with other team members and hourly associates
  • Manage tooling and gauge design and drawings
  • Provide training and guidance to all employee levels in the operation and maintenance of new equipment.
  • Proven track record of data driven methodology to solve complex problems

Minimum Education & Experience

Education Required:

  • BS Degree in Electrical, Mechanical or Mechatronics Engineering or 4+ years relevant experience

Work Experience Required:

  • 3-5+ years of experience working with advanced manufacturing automation equipment
  • Experience with SolidWorks or other 3D CAD software
  • Experience working with automation Systems, Robotics and PLCs
  • Strong hands-on experience with high-volume and pilot manufacturing
  • Experience with manufacturing process simulation modeling (RoboGuide, Visual Components, Witness)
  • Strong hands-on experience with high-volume and pilot manufacturing
  • Ability to program and troubleshoot PLCs (preferably Rockwell) & Robots (preferably Fanuc)
  • Demonstrated experience trouble shooting electro/mechanical systems
  • Lean manufacturing practices (Kanban, Poke-Yoke, JIT, Value Stream Mapping)
  • Strong Project Management skills
  • Familiar with automation safety standards
  • Design and application knowledge of ergonomic and machine safety standards
